Buy or Build??
What is your best choice, new construction or a home that's already built
and possibly in an established neighborhood?

For some there is nothing like a brand new home, one on which you can place your personal stamp. Others are more inclined to choose a pre-existing home. There are usually very strong emotional reasons for picking one or the other.

Consider the pros and cons before making your final choice. There are usually affordable options for both, although new construction normally costs a bit more per square foot.  New homes may offer amenities such as large family rooms, great rooms, large walk-in closets and master suites which are popular with new home buyers. And outlying subdivisions can quite often yield spacious yards, an attractive option for people with children or pets.

Then there is the matter of maintenance. New home buyers usually feel secure that there will be few repairs for several years and they can devote time to more fun projects.

But for some, there is nothing like the charm and elegance of an older home. Taller ceilings, beautiful woodwork and a comfortable, established neighborhood outweigh any concerns about maintenance. A pre-owned home that has been well cared for can often be quite a bargain. There is usually more square footage for the money.

Previous owners may have spent their time and energy constructing a beautiful garden or upgrading the interior. Improvements made through the years are a benefit to you, the new home owner.

Whatever your decision, be sure to get a home inspection. And for peace of mind, consider a home warranty that covers the home's systems and appliances for at least a year.
